At Hillier Jewellers we have been looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce waste.
We’re pleased to share with you a range of the changes we’ve made, and hope to implement in the near future.
Boxes that our suppliers use to send us goods will be reused whenever possible. So if the box you receive your item in looks like it’s seen better days, rest assured that your item is safely packaged inside and a the box has been reused.
For the majority of goods, we do of course need to purchase cardboard boxes. These are plain recyclable cardboard mailing boxes.
For items that don’t really fit into your typical cardboard box, we have previously used standard non-recyclable mailing bags.
However, we have just begun using mailing bags made of a sugar cane bi-product. This is a fully recyclable and carbon neutral material. The sugar cane is grown on reclaimed wasteland and no fossil fuels are used in the manufacturing.
Previously we have used standard green packing peanuts and air cushions to fill the gaps in between goods and boxes. We do not plan to order any more of these items.
Instead, we have switched to using 100% recycled paper and biodegradable air cushions to for larger voids. We also now use biodegradable packing peanuts.
Bubble wrap is often used in the wrapping of watch & jewellery boxes. Our watches and jewellery come in official boxes supplied by the manufacturer and are often given as gifts, therefore we do need to protect the boxes so they don’t get damaged in transit.
Although bubble wrap can be reused, we are aware that most of it will end up in the bin.
We are currently looking at using paper bubble wrap which is made from 100% recycled paper, and is 100% recyclable.
If you do receive any of the following materials, it is because we’re using up our current stock and do not plan to order any more
Non-recyclable bubble lined envelopes
Non-recyclable void fill
Non-recyclable white polythene mailing bags
We will also reuse any materials that our suppliers ship our goods with
We’re always looking to make improvements so please feel free to get in touch if you have any suggestions, they would be most welcome
